Delta Sigma Pi Pledging Print E-mail
News

The purpose of our pledge education is to teach new pledges what it means to be a member of the fraternity.  This is more than just wearing a badge; we want all of the members of our chapter to really love the group and want to give back to it.  Pledge education is a time for potential future members to realize how they will be able to contribute to the group once they are initiated.  It will last six weeks and is a time for pledges to get an in-depth preview of membership and make a final decision on their pursuit of membership.

During the pledging period, we will formally present Fraternity history and information to our pledges.  By planning and participating in various projects, pledges will learn the business operational requirements of the Fraternity.  Pledges will become familiar with the opportunities and obligations available and expected through membership, including: knowledge of basic local and national Fraternity history and operations; meeting procedures, ettiquette and organizational skills; special event and fundraising planning skills; and the Fraternity’s emphasis on personal and professional development of the individual.

We are the newly reactivated Gamma Chapter of the Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity at Boston University, located in the New England region of the Northeastern province.  Our brothers are Boston University undergraduate students, both male and female, who are currently pursuing a major in Business Administration at the School of Management or in Economics at the College of Arts and Sciences.

Our mission is about the betterment of our members.  We engage in community service events to better the Boston and BU communities, and in professional events to further our understanding of business.  We offer networking events and opportunities, hold social events to build brotherhood in our fraternity, and much more.

The Gamma Chapter was started at Boston University in the early 1900s and was officially the third chapter of the national fraternity.  Unfortunately, this chapter diffused in the early 1990s.  Recently, Jenny Waxberg solicited help from her fellow SMG students to re-activate the chapter here at Boston University.  After a two-and-a-half year process, the Gamma Chapter has been successfully re-activated on campus.  This past October, the Fraternity initiated 44 founding brothers and two faculty brothers, UPO Director Norm Blanchard and SMG Law Professor David Randall.

Delta Sigma Pi is a professional fraternity organized to foster the study of business in universities; to encourage scholarship, social activity and the association of students for their mutual advancement by research and practice; to promote closer affiliation between the commercial world and students of commerce, and to further a higher standard of commercial ethics and culture and the civic and commercial welfare of the community.

Delta Sigma Pi was founded in 1907 at the New York University School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance by Harold Valentine Jacobs, Alexander Frank Makay, Alfred Moysello and Henry Albert Tienken.  Today, coast to coast, more than 250 chapters and over 200,000 members support the goals and ideals of the Fraternity.

National Honorary Members are initiated into Delta Sigma Pi in recognition of their personal achievements and significant contributions to business, government, education or the Fraternity.  Most recently, these include Richard J. Riordan, Mayor of the City of Los Angeles; Russel G. Mawby, Chairman of the Board of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Gordon Bethune, Chairman and CEO of Continental Airlines; Greg Jones, President and CEO of State Farm General Insurance Company; and David Oreck, Founder of Oreck Corporation.
